Hailing from the rolling hills of North Carolina, guitarist, banjoist, and songwriter Justin Poindexter is the descendent of a long line of storytellers. Specializing in American roots including jazz, blues, country and folk, Justin mines America’s rich cultural history, linking music across genres and presenting it in new contexts. His guitar playing and songs have been featured in hundreds of venues from New York's Carnegie Hall to Lincoln Center to Nashville's Music City Roots. Justin has traveled the world as a musical ambassador for the U.S. State Department, performing and collaborating with musicians in Vietnam, China, Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, Turkey, Azerbaijan, and mostly recently Germany, Poland, and Estonia with Sasha Papernik as “Our Band.” Justin appears in the 2017 film “The Promise” with Christian Bale and on the Golden Globe winning "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel."
Justin co-leads the accliamed Americana ensemble Silver City Bound (formerly the Amigos) and has performed with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, folk icon David Amram, Ken Peplowski, Ranger Doug, Monty Alexander, Jonathan Batiste, Brianna Thomas, Doug Wamble, Nellie McKay, Art Baron, Bill Crow, Bernard Purdie, Pete Seeger, and many more. His 2014 album with the Amigos, “Diner in the Sky,” won Americana Album of the Year from the Independent Music Awards and was praised by the Wall Street Journal.
Committed to education and outreach, Justin co-designed and leads "Let Freedom Swing," the nation's largest in-school jazz concert series for Jazz at Lincoln Center. This global concert program presents jazz through the lens of American history, and is the 2016 and 2018 recipient of a transformative grant from the Rockefeller Foundation. The program will give 600 performances this year in NYC, London, New Orleans, Los Angeles, Detroit, St. Louis, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Melbourne and Sydney, Australia.
